Dear Clayton Community:

I am writing to you to make you aware of recent rubberized floor issues in surrounding districts that are prompting us to test two of our rubberized gym floors.  The issue is related to the installation process and the use of mercury. As a precaution, we have contracted with Epic Environmental to conduct testing of our High School/Middle School auxiliary gym floor and the gym floor at Simmons Elementary School.

The floors are being tested to see if mercury had been used during the installation process.  Floors that contain mercury, under certain conditions, may emit vapors which can be hazardous.  The use of mercury in the installation process was banned in 2000. The High School/Middle School auxiliary gym floor was installed in 2003, and the gym floor at the Elementary School was installed in 2015.  In addition to testing the floors we will also be temporarily relocating all of our physical education classes from those areas. This also applies to all of our after-school activities. The areas will remain closed until we receive the test results.  I feel this is a prudent step to take while we await the results of our testing.  I will be sharing the testing results as soon as they become available as well as any additional precautionary measures that may need to be taken.

As always, Clayton Public School District is committed to providing a safe learning and work environment. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely yours,

Nikolaos C. Koutsogiannis

The Clayton Public School District is pleased to announce its new strategic plan, “Forward 2021:  In Pursuit of Excellence.” Developing Forward 2021 was a true collaborative effort that documented multiple community workshops, focus group sessions, survey questions, and comments. The process began in Fall 2017 with a collection of stakeholder input from current community leaders, parents, students, members of the Clayton Board of Education, District administration, teachers, and staff.

In Spring of 2018, a planning committee was formed to create a strategic plan in response to the primary stakeholder priorities. Forward 2021 includes a mission, vision, theory of action, goals, metrics, and core values driven by research and best practices.  The strategic planning committee utilized extensive data gathering to gain an understanding of the strengths and needs of the District from the perspective of the internal and external constituents.  The collected data was used to set forth a purposeful plan that is directed towards establishing higher standards for the District.

Forward 2021 holds the District accountable to measurable goals that will drive student success now and in the future.  The identified goal metrics are a combination of qualitative, quantitative, and perception data. The achievement of this plan will continue to rest on the collaborative process within the District and among community partners.

Forward 2021 Strategic Plan Goals:

  • Goal 1: Provide professional development opportunities to address the instructional needs of staff and students.
  • Goal 2: Provide professional development opportunities to address the instructional needs of staff and students.
  • Goal 3: Provide technology to staff and students to support curriculum and programs to increase student achievement.
  • Goal 4: Foster a healthy, safe, and supportive learning environment for all staff and students.
  • Goal 5: Foster positive community relations through active engagement and effective communication.
