Letter to the Community: First Week of School Schedule

Dear Clayton Community:

I hope this letter finds you and your family well. It has been an interesting summer, to say the least.

Several weeks ago, the District unveiled its Road Back to School Plan. Last week, the plan was reviewed and approved by the New Jersey Department of Education. Therefore, I am informing you that our intentions are to move forward with the Phase 2 Hybrid Blue/Gold Schedule to start the 2020-2021 school year. However, as we know, during this time of uncertainty, we must remain flexible. Outside forces such as increasing COVID-19 rates or community outbreaks may force us to change course.

I am confident that we have done our due diligence to make returning to school as safe as possible. All staff and students will be required to wear masks. Social distancing will be strictly enforced. Hand washing and sanitizing stations have been placed in all classrooms and throughout the buildings. We have purchased air and surface cleaning machines that can clean large areas quickly. These are just some highlights of the precautions that we are taking so that we can open the school buildings safely. As we know, there are no guarantees in this “pandemic life.” Despite our best efforts, COVID-19 infections may occur. This is the new reality that we live in. I have placed on our District website the New Jersey Department of Education recommended closure matrix that we will be using to inform you of decisions on school closings should it become necessary. I encourage you to review and become familiar with this document.

I understand that we have parents who may still be concerned about sending their children to school. For those parents, I encourage you to review our Clayton Cyber School option. I believe we have put together a strong online learning plan that will provide a positive educational experience for your child. Please visit our website for additional information about Clayton Cyber School.

Over the next week, you will be mailed additional information from your building principal. The information will include Power School logins and the detailed schedule.  Below is the adjusted schedule for the first week of school for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. Preschool will begin the week of September 14th

Finally, I want to publicly thank our Clayton School District staff. I cannot say enough about  how proud I am of all their efforts to get us to the point where we can return to school. Our teachers have been working hard all summer developing lessons. Administrators are leading multiple committees to ensure that the buildings are safe and ready to open. Our support staff members have gone above and beyond in their efforts keep our buildings clean.

As always, thank you for your support, and stay “Clipper Strong.”

Sincerely yours,

Nikolaos C. Koutsogiannis
Superintendent of Schools
